This is a coming-of-age story set during the early 1980s among the Pakistanis in Milwaukee. Hayat Shah, an impressionable adolescent and the only child of a well-to-do, secular family, finds his comfortable existence upended by the arrival of his mother’s childhood friend Mina Ali and her son Imran, who have fled a life of abuse and repression in Pakistan. A good look at a Pakistani family trying to make a new life for themselves in the United States. The conflicts within family and extended family members as well as adapting to life in a foreign country while maintaining one's own values and customs provides an interesting read. The book seems to be roughly an account of the author's own life. ...more
