This is one of those books that's been sitting on my shelf for years. Each winter (because winter always seemed the appropriate month to read it) I'd flip through it and decide it wasn't time. That finally changed this December. I loved the beautiful descriptions of the scenery and the portrait of island life in the Pacific Northwest. I'm glad I read it, but it wasn't gripping or thrilling like the reviews said, rather, it was a book fit for winter: slow-paced, somber, decembral. ...more
