What Members Thought
This one sucked me in on so many levels - the local color, the incredibly prescient quality of a novel written in the 1970s, the language, and the way she makes this utterly unreal world hang together with its own logic. Fascinating and surprisingly deep considering its short length.
I read this for a book club focusing on speculative fiction (a by ladies for ladies gig) and we all pretty much came to the conclusion that we wanted more out of this book. It's not that it's a bad book or anything -- I can't imagine it would have its place in the canon if it were genuinely a bad book. However, given what we all knew of Ursula K. LeGuin's work, we were left wondering why this felt so bare: Why so little character development? Why are some of the themes so plainly laid before us?
