3.5 stars. I’m enjoying this series more as it progresses. I almost didn’t care at all about the mystery in this one, though. I read this mainly to check in with a slew of favorite characters. Orlagh Cassidy does the audio for I believe every book in this series, and does them beautifully. I’ve already started the ninth book! Lisa, I want to thank you again for recommending this series to me. It’s a comfort read and we could all use more of those. ❤️

While this remains one of my favorite series of all time, this isn't my favorite entry in it - there's a lot of setup but relatively little action, which leaves Winspear's normally perfectly tuned pace feeling a little slow. I'm trusting that she's going to take this groundwork somewhere interesting in future installments, but I do feel like this one's a bit on the weak side.

As with the more recent titles, this is not as dense as the earliest books in the series. I can see where the ominiscient Maisie in regard to the coming of WWII will start to grate. I also continue to be irritated by the author's getting titles of nobility wrong. Couldn't she have fixed that by now? Why perpetuate errors?

The further I get into this series the more I enjoy it. The lead up to WWII is particularly interesting and I am continually amazed at the parallels between events and people in the books and the current day. Especially since at this point in the series these books were written well before the scary political events we've been experiencing the past decade.
