This book provided me with an outsiders perspective of China and Chinese. While I did enjoy parts of the book, I really felt like the author was trying to write a textbook rather than a memoir.

I'm quite interested in linguistics and linguistic anthropology, so I did enjoy the perspective that she brought. I also feel like I have a little more insight into the Chinese culture, which is a good thing as I work with international graduate students, and almost half of them are from China. :)

Fallows accompanied her journalist husband to China. She tried to learn Chinese during her time there, but found this task to be much more daunting than she’d expected. She also learned many strange things about the Chinese language which she shares with us in this little book.
