What Members Thought

While Joanna's role in her times was certainly unique, unfortunately Goldstone isn't able to overcome the relative paucity of sources to create much of a human portrait of her or almost anyone else in her milieu save the pontiffs. History gets interesting only when we can see the protagonists as more than the actors in a recitation of factual events, and this one ends up missing that mark.
