This isn't a book that is fun to read, but it is a book that stays with you after it is finished. The story is mainly about the horrors of the first world war, as experienced by a couple of young Cree Indians, and the way it changes them both. The other thread to the story is of an older Cree woman, aunt Niska, who still lives the old ways and remains at home.
