Historical fiction, taking place in 14th century Spain. I liked this book a lot. I loved the characters and the character development, and I finished this book wanting to know so much more about Spain in the 14th century. :)
A delightful book about a young serf who inadvertently rises through the feudal ranks in 14th century Spain. The grounding factor in Arnau Estanyol’s life is the Cathedral of the Sea, Santa Maria de la Mar, which he helps build as the youngest bastaix. In spite of the position and the riches that Arnau attains through hard work and some chance, he holds fast to his principles of humility, equality among men, and integrity. Amazing book. For anyone that enjoys historical fictions this is up there with one of the best that I've read.

A big sweeping epic that's weighed down by a protagonist idealized far beyond plausibility and some extremely awkward exposition that does more to show off the author's research than contribute to the story. A resounding meh.
