Probably 2 1/2 stars. There is plenty to keep the reader's interest and the author really does write well. But frankly, after reading The Far Pavilions by M.M. Kaye this book could never get 3+ stars from me.
Firstly, The Far Pavilions covers a similar time period with MUCH better historical context and with a much more even hand culturally. It's a massive novel, which gives it a stronger advantage in character development, but I think Kaye just does a better job with that as well. If you hold a ...more
