I wonder if this was Edith Wharton's attempt to outdo Thomas Hardy in writing the most depressing story in all literature. It was certainly a worthy attempt.

I liked this much more than I did in English 3! It was easy to read with beautiful imagery. Frome is a real, tangible character because he is not perfect, and doesn't fall for a perfect woman either. The sad ending was appropriate and moving.
