This novel didn’t work for me on the whole, despite the fulsome praise it’s gotten from so many people. It took quite a few efforts before I could get into the story; the tedious present-day part was the main obstacle. Where was the dazzling writing that caused people to go into raptures and declare it close to a masterpiece? Lyrically written novel that borders on fantasy interweaving superstitions and legends about life, death, healing, a doctor and her grandfather, zoo animals and a tiger, all taking place in one of the recently devastated Balkan countries.
A mix of present day and folklore in some unnamed Balkan country. The folklore parts were quite interesting and entertaining, the present day, not so much. A lot was unsaid and left to the imagination, which can be annoying.
I kept waiting for this book to go somewhere, it never did!
