The year is 1938 and Pereira Maintains is set in Lisbon. The Spanish civil war is raging next door in Spain. Pereira is trying the cultural editor for the newspaper Lisboa. The newspapers in Portugal are censored so heavily, that no one gets the real news from the papers. Pereira is trying to stay as apolitical as possible, but he is obsessed with death and his soul. He reads a thesis by a recent graduate, gets in touch him, and from that moment his life is changed.
