Jim Dixon is a history professor at a rural college in the early 1950's. Dixon hates his job and especially his head professor Welch. This is a comic novel chronicling Dixon's exploits including a madrigal weekend at Welch's and a school ball. I found some of these events amusing and at other times was annoyed with Dixon for acting so stupid and staying in a job he hates. I think this is supposed to be a funny book. I did find it smile worthy, and I did enjoy Dixon's internal monologue. I found the scrapes he seemed to keep getting himself into were certainly interesting. Many people quoted his morning after response to an alcoholic binge: "His mouth had been used as a latrine by some small creature of the night, and then as its mausoleum.", which was very entertaining.

I read this for a British lit class and found it funny and entertaining. Easy read, interesting characters, and definitely made me laugh
