I resisted reading this book, because I planned on a Circus story being depressing. Was I surprised! This romantic page-turner, told in flashbacks through the eyes of the 80 year old main character who is struggling to cope in a nursing home, was captivating.
This was a reread. Enjoyed it the second time through as much as the first
I very much enjoyed this book. It was engaging from the get go. It is a love story and touches on the atrocities of a traveling circus in the early 1900s. The narration toggles between Jacob young 20 year-old-self and his elderly self (either 90 or 93, he cannot remember). The book is sprinkled with metaphors. I love Sara Gruen's writing style. This is a perfect book for summer reading or a book club.
