A beautifully written book about the most miserable, dreary people I've ever come across. I wanted to read it because they are filming the HBO series here in the town I live in but what a collection of cranky, dis-likable characters! The only person in the book I liked was Olive's husband Henry. I kept hearing that it was a great story about the "human condition"--I guess I've never met those sorts of humans.

What an interesting character is Olive! The others characters in her story and her town are as interesting. I am not always a fan of the short-stories-connected-to-a-character/theme format, but I found that I enjoyed reading this one. At the end, though, I found myself wanting to know what happened next to Olive and her acquaintances.
