Although John Steinbeck novels are light on plot, they are heavy on social commentary, a sense of place, and violence (which is kept at a low boil, and doesn't spoil the book). Cannery Row is peopled with an array of colorful characters, whom we get to know and love.

I'm always amazed at just how good Steinbeck is at capturing a certain time and place. Makes me crave getting back to Monterey, but mostly I was wondering if there is any such communities that could be subjected to novelization in 21st Century America. I was left with a nagging sense of loss, even though, in many ways, things are significantly better and not lost at all. I've become a big fan of Steinbeck's style and his gift for capturing that undefinable mesh that holds a community together. His language isn't necessarily flowery or showy, but you absolutely pick up the sense that each word is carefully chosen to evoke something very specific.

I haven't read much Steinbeck, but this was an interesting one after having been to Monterrey peninsula and seen the place he wrote about. It is a lot more upscale these days.
