Political intrigue, violently gruesome gladiatorial combats, spoiled and scheming aristocratic women, beautiful and talented slaves and mistresses, and, of course, a tragically insane Emperor are all included in this first novel in the series by Kate Quinn, entitled Rome. While reading this novel, I felt as if I had fallen into the Hollywood epics such as Ben-Hur and Spartacus although there wasn't a good chariot race! Ancient Rome at its best and worse was the theme of this novel.

I really liked this book, but didn't love it. The historical parts of it were good, but some based on facts, others on imagination. It did bring the gladiators, the colliseum, and the soldiers to life.
Some of the characters I did love, some I despised, some I thought were funny. Some of the comments that were made were great "interesting in a poisonous snake kind of interesting" in describing a child's mother.. was right on T.
