While there are some interesting elements to this book, McKay's story really suffers from one of the major pitfalls of writing historical fiction - the author becoming so enamored of her research that she feels compelled to drop it in regardless of whether or not it serves the story well. The story moves along well, but it's hard to look past the plot elements that are clearly there to showcase long hours at the archives rather than meaningfully contribute to the overall themes McKay's trying to

I liked this book. If you don't dissect it too much, it is a pleasant little tale of a woman who triumphs over both a philandering husband and the medical establishment in the form of a complete prat of a male doctor. And given that I've delivered many babies and am actually a doctor, that's high praise. Dora learns her craft from an older woman, who has her own ways and herbal remedies- she's all about low-tech medicine and has earned the respect of her community for her healing over many years

Life is hard, but even harder as a female living in rural Nova Scotia in the early 20th century. Loved the characters in this book. I wish I could meet them myself and join their knitting club. ha
