I don't know what's in the Scottish water, but it seems like all the fiction I've read from there is messed up (in a good way). This particular book is another in line, as a glance at the Library of Congress Cataloging data for this book shows: "Fathers and sons-- Scotland-- Fiction, Serial murders-- Scotland-- Fiction, Teenage boys-- Scotland-- Fiction, Psychopaths- -Scotland-- Fiction, Murders-- Scotland-- Fiction." I have never cared about a character less than Frank, the main character of this novel. this was just not my cup of tea. I'm moving on...

Couldn't tear my eyes away, but the ending, I felt, was a bit abrupt and heavy-handed - made all the symbolism in the book (especially with regard to (view spoiler) ) a bit more obvious than it needed to be. Still, this is a good first experience with Banks, funny while being macabre, and I plan to read more of both 'Iain Banks' and 'Iain M. Banks'.
