I bought this book in the fall of 2006, and since then it has languished in boxes, storage units, and various bookshelves in multiple US states. In search of new reading material, I pulled it off my bookshelf and was surprised to see it had won a Pulitzer Prize and dealt with 20th century American and European history - I had remembered it as a book about comics, which didn't make my blood boil.

Accidentally left the book in the travel trailer and had to get a kindle edition to finish. Glad for the kindle edition because there were so many words that I had to look up the definition for. Finishing this book was a real achievement for
me! I started it three times before I got
hooked on the characters of Joe and Sammy.
The ending was flat and a lot of the story
felt forced, but, on the whole, it held
together.
