Set in pre-WWII Europe, you get a taste of the suspicion between neighbors, co-workers, and friends. Everyone is listening, and may be reporting you to someone else. The main character is a journalist who works for Reuters and lives in Paris. He left Italy because of the fascist dictator, Mussolini; and now is involved in publishing an underground newspaper. This certainly gave me a new respect for anyone who resisted during those times
