Done for a while. Too many (male) spies/too many plotlines/too much USSR/too many pages/not enough women who exist as things other than than sex objects.

The later books are much better in all those areas.

Furst is known for the moody, introspective spy novel, and this is no exception - the contrast between the intimate, close-up view of his protagonist and the sweepingly huge events swirling around him is one of the highlights of this one. I especially love the small poignant moments he works into his narrative - the scene where Szara discovers a rock with a scrap of yellow fabric attached (tossed from a train like a message in a bottle) is probably one of the most moving images I've read of the ...more
