Although my favorite book on Shackleton's expedition is Alfred Lansing's account, this is also an excellent version. Focusing on the diverse members of the crew, Alexander creates vivid portraits of each man, revealing the camaraderie and toughness that undoubtedly contributed to their survival. The main narrative is interspersed with extracts from the crew's journals, and there is of course a portrayal of Shackleton himself, a truly gifted leader. What’s better than the tale of Shackleton’s Antarctic Expedition? The tale of Shackleton’s expedition WITH PICTURES!

The tale of the Endurance crew is probably the most extraordinary true-adventure tale of all-time. And this book is my favorite retelling of the story. The B&W photos are gorgeously reproduced, and Alexander even tells some details of how they were taken and preserved.
