If you enjoyed the film "The Lover," then you may also enjoy this more in-depth review of the author's childhood relationships in French Indochina. Marguerite Duras wrote this towards the end of her life, reflecting on her first experience with love (at a very early age). I found the descriptions of the scenery, Duras' writing style, and the relationship struggles to be the most interesting portions of the book (and they are throughout). I read this a year or two after I saw the Tony Leung movie "The Lover" - I was a little disappointed, I expected more somehow. I enjoyed the movie so much, I thought the book would be all that and MORE, but it was a bit too "spare" for my youthful taste at the time. ...more
