Set in the 1940's in rural Mississippi this is the story of two families, one african american and one white, told from the perspective of 6 characters. When Jamie McAllan and Ronsel Jackson return home from fighting in WWII they become friends despite the fact that one is white and one is black. Definitely one of those books where nothing quite turns out very well for anyone, but utterly appropriate to the time and place Jordan chose - her unsanitized view of race relations in the post-WWII South draws you deep into her story and leaves you with troubling questions to ponder.
