Set in the 1940's in rural Mississippi this is the story of two families, one african american and one white, told from the perspective of 6 characters. When Jamie McAllan and Ronsel Jackson return home from fighting in WWII they become friends despite the fact that one is white and one is black. Brilliant look at race relationships between blacks and Caucasians during and slightly after WWII in Mississippi.
Definitely one of those books where nothing quite turns out very well for anyone, but utterly appropriate to the time and place Jordan chose - her unsanitized view of race relations in the post-WWII South draws you deep into her story and leaves you with troubling questions to ponder.
Beautifully written but a very difficult story about people whose lives are so hard for so many reasons. But very worth reading.
