I had forgotten just how good Steinbeck can be. The sprawling epic mirroring the story of Cain and Abel in repeated generations illustrates why religion is much more powerful as metaphor and literature, rather than fundamental literalist creeds. Uplifted and sorrowed simultaneously, a sign of great writing and great life.
