I loved the premise of this suspense novel: ex-Communist English journalist in pre-war Berlin; he's tied to the city by his German son. Downing's also really done his research in regard to Berlin and other cities; roads, trains, buildings, built up in minutest detail. Unfortunately, his plot and characters were two-dimensional against the three-dimensional backdrop. It was particularly irritating how very prescient Russell was about what was to come.

A loose plot that comes to an abrupt and somewhat unsatisfying halt mars an otherwise well-written novel that probes the emotional challenges of passivity and resistance.
