I didn't know anything about this book going into it. Needless to say, I was disappointed. I realize that this was his first published novel (I believe his short stories were published first). I have definitely decided that I will keep to his later books from now on. This book was just too disturbing for me.

So dark and sad and...hopeless isn't the right word, but this was one of the first books that I HAD to journal along with while reading and force myself to take mental breaks. Even though it's not of substantial length, the content weighs heavily on the conscience, and I found myself both disturbed and intrigued by the story line.

Deeply dysfunctional, but probably would have felt fresher had I read it before the recent TV trends towards the topics McEwan covers here. He clearly means for you to feel chills, but my exhaustion with the whole messed-up-kids-as-facsimile-of-adults meme leaves me with little reaction.
