Summer wasn’t quite on the same level as The House of Mirth or The Custom of the Country for me, but it’s still a compelling and surprising read. It’s one of Wharton’s only rural novels and deals frankly with sexuality, class, and the limited choices available to women, which made it pretty controversial at the time of publication. It's been a long haul but I finally finished this on the Kindle on my phone. I actually quite enjoyed this book - it's much different than Wharton's other works and interesting if initially slow (even for Wharton) and hard to get through.
