If only Amy Chua didn't stress much about using "western mother" and "chinese mother", I would like this book even better. But since she used it excessively, stars would be enough. Why? cause my mother is no Chinese mother as per her definition but the way she brought me up is more or less the same. Oh, minus the force for music lesson. Something that I actually regretted to this day. If only my mother forced me into music or dance lesson, my right brain might be a little smarter. But nonetheles ...more

I was fascinated by this look into the life of a modern Chinese-American family. Amy Chua has written an honest, unflinching account of her life as a "Chinese" mother who becomes at least somewhat Americanized.

Although Chua has been vilified for not allowing her daughters to have playdates or sleepovers, and I doubt many Americans wish she was their Mom, I'd argue she makes the case for her parenting practices. The details of such a lifestyle that is so foreign to so many of us - yet is also in

Such an interesting read, and a very fast book too. I first heard about this book on the radio - an NPR interview with the author. That was years ago and I immediately wanted to read it then. It sounded so controversial. And it is - I am appalled at how she treats her daughters, the things she says to them and the threats. The Chinese way might produce children who are more productive - but is that the point? Having that much intensity and yelling in your home to me would never be worth any amou ...more

Much different from the Newsweek hype article last year. Yes she is nuts, but a like her sense of humor. Interesting Chinese vs. Western parenting idea.
