Newland Archer has it all---he's a gentleman lawyer, occasionally popping into the office to do little bits of work, but generally occupying himself dining and socializing with his fellow affluent friends---and now, to cap off a wonderful life, his beloved May has agreed to marry him. I initially rated it 3 stars, but the more I think about her subtle irony and sneaky sense of humor about NY society life during the golden age, the more I like this book. This is in a way a book without a hero, you can't really feel for any of the main characters, since their problems are of their own doing, but you can empathize on some level.

The Story
(About opera)
…since an unalterable and unquestioned law of the musical world required that the German text of French operas sung by Swedish artists should be translated into Italian for the clearer understanding of English-speaking audiences.
(About a member of the main social set)
No one in the …set could understand why [she] had submitted so tamely to the eccentricities of a husband who filled the house with long-haired men and short-haired women…..

I read this book for a book club discussion, and we all agreed that we are so thankful that we did not live in this time period and in this class in society! The book was a very good slice-of-life portrait of the wealthy in New York City in the 1870's, and as such was a good book. Of course, I kept finding myself talking to the characters and telling them what to do that would make their lives so much better --- but for some reason they didn't listen - lol!

This is a 3.5 book, in my opinion. The other Edith Wharton I read, although depressing, was much better (more of a page-turner). This one was a bit unbelievable and just frustrating all the way thru. I hoped the ending would resolve lots of things, but it was just as frustrating! Glad to be thru with this one.
