This is a good book deserving of the Pulitizer Prize in 1920. When I first started reading this book I thought, Thank God, I don't live in 1870's New York. I also thought this book isn't relevant to today but now I have changed that opinion. This book is relevant because I believe it represents a struggle that many people deal with: appearance, values and society. Newland Archer is engaged but is attracted to the married cousing of his fiancee. An interesting look into upperclass New York life at the end of the 1800's. I found Newland to be rather annoying and like both women far more than I liked him. ...more

Shelves: literature
Wharton is one of my favorite authors for the descriptions of New York and high society of the late 19th century. Her stories may have been limited in scope as to the reality of the time but it reminds one of the glittering illusion of the super rich through a tinted looking glass.
