I almost loved this and indeed, it was better than Broken Glass Park, but I was disappointed when it was over. The beginning, which takes place from 1978 on in the Soviet Union, is satisfying and the characters are unique. Whew! Is there a narrator of a book out there anywhere who is more savage, more self-satisfied, and more manipulative than Rosa Achmetowna, the narrator and main character of Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine? What a story! I read straight through and I feel like I’ve just spent four hours in hand-to-hand combat.

The Good: Cool title: The Bad: The first 15 pages, the narrator describes how she was trying to make her pregnant daughter miscarry. Yuk. I guess it is supposed to be humorous but I don't find it so.
