I admire the careful and meticulous thought behind the writing of the Memoirs of Hadrian. And I also admire so many of the book's carefully constructed sentences with their time and mortality themed musings. Then there are the thoughtful meditations on how-to-run an empire that is dangerously overextended. Those meditations are important given that the recipient ("Mark") will be the future emperor Marcus Aurelius. In isolation, be it sentences or paragraphs, the book is a gigantic quote barn.
