With lines like "She wore department store perfume that made promises she had no intention of keeping.", Earle cements the fact that he knows how to write a sentence that sticks in your mind. I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive, is a story that only Steve Earle could write. His written words sound like what I expect he sounds like when speaking. It is written in the voice of a man who has seen the grittier side of life.

Absolutely fantastic! This dark novel tells the story of Doc Ebersole, a broken down addict scraping together an existence on the wrong side of San Antonio in the 60s. Haunted by the ghost of Hank Williams, to whom he may have administered his fatal overdose, he encounters a young woman who changes the course of the lives of everyone around her. The prose is raw, revealing, and gorgeous. I listened on #audio, read by the author/actor.

I thought that this book had a chance at being quite good, but it was too disjointed & didn't really come together. A disappointment.
