I really enjoyed this book in both print and audio versions. It was very atmospheric, along with its predecessor, and I’m enjoying the development of the main detective character (and yes, watching his love life develop as well lol). I was genuinely surprised by the murderer in this one.

If I had to read this again, I would read it by itself, not alongside four or five others as I typically do and I would also come up with a little cast of characters for myself. Although if I read this and nothi

An intriguing and atmospheric mystery.

He walked out on to the open hill to the sound of skylark and curlew and into a raw orange light. It must already be late in the evening, because the huge ball of the sun was dipping towards the cliff-edge. There too, silhouetted, was the figure of a man, unrecognizable at this distance. A gothic figure against the setting sun.

The resolution hinges on events that happened in the past, and the people who remember them.  But I kept getting confused abou

Cleeves's series is all about setting, and she does a nice job capturing the vague disquiet that comes from the sun never quite going down. While you'll likely guess the result of one of the mysteries, there are still a couple of late twists that surprise. ...more

This is an excellent second entry into the Ann Cleeves series set on one of the Shetland Islands. It is an intriguing story of how Inspector Jimmy Perez has to solve a complicated set of murders that seem not to be inked to the inhabitants of this tiny town but yet turn out to be so. The ultimate murderer turns out to be a surprise to the reader. This is an excellent and well-written series with wonderful characters and a unique setting.
