Confession time: for some years I kept Walden by my bedside as a soporific. I invariably found that it put me to sleep! However, those repeated dippings into Thoreau have left me with a residual fondness, and I suspect I'd probably relate better to him now than I did back in my teens.

So I tried this book on audiobook...and I just couldn't get through it. I thought I was going to hear this beautiful, poetic naturalist experience but it seemed more like a rant against mainstream living. I wanted to hear the positive, the alternative, the clean and pure... But this was way too political for me. It didn't touch me. Maybe I'll try it again in the future, but I was experiencing too much anxiety listening. Maybe I just didn't make it to the good parts.
