This is a reflective tale, told from the perspective of an ageing man who has retreated to the wilds of Norway to be alone. He comes to realise that he knows his nearest neighbour from years ago, and this reminds him of a time when he was a boy living with his father, when one of the turning points of his life occurred. While he is surviving alone with his dog in the winter the flashbacks to that earlier time are woven into the narrative, revealing the stories behind the story: his relationship ...more

3.5 stars. This is a book that I enjoyed very much when I started reading, and as I got toward the middle of the story, and then it kind of fell apart for me. I wished I would have liked this book more ... it was well written but I couldn't connect with the last half of the book. I felt there were things missing and questions I wanted answered.

What interests me is the variety of reviews - people were either moved beyond belief or they were like me - we just didn't get it.

It was pretty slow and I'm not really sure I even understood what happened in the end. I found the characters interesting and I wanted to know more about what happened to them though. ...more

I read so many reviews here on Goodreads about this book, because it is the type of book I would like to discuss. The story left me hanging in so many places, but I loved the beauty of his writing. The main character both as a boy and as an older man was so dear to me by the end of the book that I wanted to know more. A very different book for me.
