I wish i could give this 3.5 stars. I'm afraid my current opinion is a bit tainted from multiple reads and the processes of both picking it apart in theory classes and teaching excerpts to undergrads. So I'm torn - do I rate it as I would have years ago when it served as one of many catalysts in my decision to drop out of nursing school to become a medical anthropologist or as i do now, as i approach completion of my doctorate in the field? Fadiman clearly illustrates in this remarkable book how not only language but culture cause difficulties in people who really want to understand and appreciate each other.
Excellent narrative of cross cultural values in medical settings. An in depth look at the Hmong culture that is very active in Anchorage.
