Some of my students have selected this book for reports and presentations over the years . Just to be clear, they are non-native speakers of English. Sometimes they select the book because it is short. I don't think they realize how intense it is , until they get into it, but few have ever regretted choosing it. I do not really have words to describe how good this book is. I was planning to read it slowly alongside some other "lighter" books, and simply devoured it in two days, quickly abandoning the other books in favor of this one. Morrison is definitely one of the best writers around. This is a bit more direct and heavy-handed than Beloved, at moments you feel like Morrison herself sneaks in to add some social commentary. Read for book club.
Sad and difficult story for Pecola. Glad the author chose the perspective of Claudia and an omniscient third person for the narration as it would have been harder just through Pecola’s eyes.
