Some of my students have selected this book for reports and presentations over the years . Just to be clear, they are non-native speakers of English. Sometimes they select the book because it is short. I don't think they realize how intense it is , until they get into it, but few have ever regretted choosing it. Yay, I finished the Reading Women Challenge 2020! This was the very last book on that challenge: bonus novel by Toni Morrison.
As with many Nobel laureates' books, this treats a Worthy Theme. I am not always a friend of the Worthy Nobel-type book, and I did not entirely warm to this book by Morrison. It has a grim subject, with no redemption offered. It meanders from one character to the next. There is a semblance of a narrative but it stops and starts. Theme seems more important than plot.

Toni Morrison can certainly "do" language. One of the most lyrical books which deals with brutal subjects I have ever read and for such a short book, her characters are incredibly rich.
When she died last year I was embarrassed that I had not read any of her books so I was determined to read at least one before the year ended. I will miss her voice but I'm sure I will savor her ways ...more
