Philip Marlowe, PI, is asked by general Sternwood to look into the person who is blackmailing his youngest daughter. Marlowe also becomes interested in the disappearance of older daughter Vivian's husband. Reading this it felt like two books mashed together and looking it up I learned Chandler did combine two of his short stories into this book. There are a few loose ends which I didn't like and some very homophobic language. Chandler definitely can set a scene with his words but I'm in no hurry

A classic that started the entire "hard boiled detective" genre, I have been wanting to read this one for awhile. It was hard to get into at first. Because I think it started an entire genre, and I am reading it at a time where that genre has already become both mainstream and subsequently satirized, it was hard for me not to laugh at a lot of the dialogue and some of the stereotypical characters and tropes that appeared. The book that introduces Philip Marlowe, a hardboiled private eye, set in LA in the 1930s (published 1939). Not bad. I do plan on reading Farewell, My Lovely, since my copy has both titles.

Excellent. Don't understand the plot? Confused? Who cares? With this much wit, mood, word magic, verve--plot schmot! The book's as good if not better than when I read it the first time.
