I am going to confess that I didn't read this book until 1993, after I'd seen the movie. I couldn't handle horror movies or scary books at the time, but Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas and a surprisingly good Tom Cruise really got my attention.
Now I'm a bona fide fan. I'm working toward reading everything Rice has written, and now I enjoy many other authors who write about vampires.

This book just didn't hold my interest, I kept thinking that the main character was too effeminate--in the sense that I felt he really was a bit too sympathetic for my taste. I've never seen the movie either, and I'm pretty sure I won't be wasting my time with this story again...or any of the rest of this series; interestingly enough, I do like several of Rice's other books. ...more

Several centuries of moping around by a vampire concerned with the meaning of life. The book felt like it also went for several centuries. Vampires are more fun in the 21st century.

I don't really like vampires and this book did nothing to change my mind on that score, but I learned a bit about their life style and behavior that might come in handy doing a crossword puzzle or something. Even if they existed and I had a chance to adopt their life style I think I'd reject it. ...more
