In the Winter of 1945, or the Winter of Starvation as the narrator calls it, a cruel Nazi collaborator is shot and killed in occupied Holland. The Nazis in turn burn down the house of an innocent family of which Anton, age twelve is the only survivor.

The story is mesmerizing. The event of the assassination happen in the beginning, then in the subsequent chapters, Anton meets a person involved in the incident, and learns of their perspective. We see how the assault affected Anton for the rest of
