This title is the September 2019, Banned Books Month selection of South Austin Spiritual Book Group.

This book follows the story of Dana, an African-American woman living in the 1970s who is suddenly transported back in time to antebellum Maryland. She travels back and forth in time multiple times, and on one occasion her husband, Kevin, a white man, is sent back with her.

I keep thinking I don't love books with time travel but then I keep reading them and really liking them so maybe I should stop lying to myself. This book is powerful and in some ways timeless. The characters are relatable and struggle with what's happening to them in ways that make sense. It also brings in the power of family history and the tough history of our country that we still hear echoes of, even 40 years after this book was written.

I usually don't watch or read time travel narratives because they can get confusing, but this was easy to follow. In this book, the time travel wasn't explained much and I was fine with it, but I wish it was explained how the ending was possible.
