I read this more than 20 years ago and it clarified for me what a real saint is all about. Grandjean, the real life model for the main character, a Polish priest, helps me to keep believing in redemption for humanity.

I'm thinking about this after a day working on making clothes for myself, cooking and cleaning with modern conveniences, an hour's walk on the beach, and packing up an expensive purchase that I didn't need, so I can return it Tuesday. Then, a reminder about this book pops up! There

I read this book many long years ago. It is about an American doctor working in the slums of Calcutta with extremely poverty stricken and sick people. It is eye-opening and well worth reading. This is based on the true story of Dr. Stephan Kovalski.

I gave this excellent book 4-1/2 stars in my Reading Log. It was an amazing, captivating, illuminating, and challenging book of intimate portraits of the poor in Calcutta/Kolkata's City of Joy and the work among them that a Polish priest began when he moved into the slum.
