What Members Thought

The Master is a novel based on the life of Henry James. It is beautifully written. Years ago, I read The Turn of the Screw, The Portrait of a Lady and Daisy Miller by James. I loved how Toibin interweaved his books in the narrative. Most of all I loved how the author described the life of a writer.

Reminds me very much of Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day in tone and theme, particularly that of the missed opportunities for human connection. The prose is lovely and James has a full and complete persona that never feels forced or overly influenced by modern ideas. A wonderful homage to a literary lion.
