Book #2 in the Scilian Inspector Montalbano series. Simultaneously humorous, dark and light, the story starts with a staged surrender of a notorious criminal and ends with Montalbano's dogged pursuit to solve a 50-year old crime. Along the way, we learn more about Montalbano works to stave off an unwanted promotion his superiors wish to give him for his excellent detective work.

Camilleri delivers with his usual dry wit which I love, but the translator deserves credit as well as many of the humorous parts are a product of word play which he rendered in English beautifully.
This one sat on my TBR shelf for the longest time, but by the end of chapter one Montalbano had charmed me completely - I love his manner and sardonic view of the world.
