I first read this book years ago, and loved the descriptions of life in the Cholistan desert in Punjab Pakistan. Rereading it again was a delight, despite the horrendous way women are treated in Pakistan.
I enjoyed this book very much. I could almost feel the grit of the sand, the heat of the sun, and the softness of the silks. I could smell the jasmine in the air and hear the tinkling of the bells and bangles. I watched Shabanu grow from a child to a woman. I enjoyed the detailed descriptions of family gatherings and the wedding. I felt very emotion.
