Almost a fairy tale, but what saves it are the persistent, well-placed seeds of reality, practicality, humor throughout. Even the hero isn't immune: "My God, this is worse than Hollywood, he thought. A girl comes in with a pork chop and I write a song for her."
It's got romance, politics, music, high society, wise children, oblivious and attentive adults, a tortoise with wheels for back legs, and even some WW II danger. And food. So it's sweet. I'm almost finished. I like it.
